What is sarcoma?<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>

Sarcoma is a malignant tumor arising in connective tissue <\/strong><\/a>such as bone, muscle, tendons, fat or cartilage.<\/p>\n

We distinguish two major groups: bone sarcoma\u00a0<\/a><\/strong>or\u00a0tissue sarcoma<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In order to determine the sarcoma type you have, microscopic investigation of tumor tissue is necessary. Apart from medical imaging (scans) doctors need to take a sample of the tumor you have, a biopsy.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Connective tissue<\/h5>

Connective tissue <\/strong>is the body\u2019s supporting tissue with several functions: protecting vital organs, reinforcement of the body (bones), shock absorber in joints (cartilage), heat preservation (fatty tissue) and movement (muscles and tendons). Blood vessels and nerves also partly consist of connective tissue. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

Bone sarcoma<\/h5>

\u00a0Sarcoma van het bot <\/strong>ontstaat in de beenderen of het bot zelf,\u00a0 dus niet in het beenmerg zoals bijvoorbeeld een myeloma<\/u>. Uitzaaiingen van een ander soort kanker zoals borstkanker of prostaatkanker in het bot zijn ook geen echte botkanker.<\/p>\n

Er zijn vier types botsarcomen: osteosarcoma<\/u>, Ewing sarcoma,<\/u> chondrosarcoma<\/u> or\u00a0chordoma<\/span>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

Soft tissue sarcoma<\/h5>

Soft tissue sarcoma\u00a0<\/strong>arises in the soft tissues of the supporting tissues such as muscles, fatty tissue, nervi tissue or tendons. There are about 70 different types of soft tissue sarcoma, each having their own characteristics.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Which parts of the body and who does sarcoma affect?<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>

Sarcoma can literally arise in every part <\/strong>of the body and at every age<\/strong>. Bone sarcoma is most often found in adolescents in the knee region. Soft tissue sarcoma is most often found in the thigh.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

What is the cause of sarcoma?<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>

Sarcoma arises after certain cells go through an incorrect cell division<\/strong> (video<\/a>) , and therefore keep on growing and dividing. Previous irradiation or lymphedema <\/a>can trigger a higher risk for developing erroneous cell divisions in the affected region. Sometimes exposition to certain chemicals can also lead to a higher risk.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, mostly no true cause <\/strong>can be found. There are no actions you have done wrong to provoke sarcoma, and there are no things you can do to avoid sarcoma. Do not blame yourself, getting sarcoma is just bad luck.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
